Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Overview

Welcome to our curriculum section.  Our starting point is the National Curriculum (NC) as we believe the aims stated within the NC give the essential knowledge needed to be educated citizens.  However, we see the NC statements as the outcomes not the programme of studies so we have developed progression documents and overviews in all our subjects.

Our curriculum is also influenced by our vision and values.  Our vision is to equip our young people with the skills and knowledge needed to enable them to be lifelong learners who are successful in the 21st century.  We aim to do this by providing challenging, creative, inspiring and fully inclusive learning experiences in which everyone’s needs are considered, diversity is valued and all achievements are celebrated. Aspects of this are weaved throughout our curriculum.  For example, in our English curriculum, the children see their diversity represented through the vast and relevant range of author and text choices.

The school’s chosen values of curiosity, kindness, forgiveness, persistence and hope also feature in our curriculum.  We believe it is our role to build on the children’s experiences and provide life enhancing opportunities so our young people become empowered, mindful citizens who are ambitious and strive to succeed.

The promotion of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development ensures that all are able to show a strong sense of respect for others' cultures, values and faiths.  The schools PHSE programme, Jigsaw, promotes the well-being of pupils and provides children with the relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

Inclusion and challenge for all

Inclusion is an encompassing belief at Central Primary and we are committed to giving all of our children every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards. We believe that every child deserves the chance to experience success; something we achieve by taking  into account pupils’ varied life experiences and needs. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum and  ensure the curriculum is accessible for those with disabilities or special educational needs  (Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 ).  The achievements, attitudes and well-being of all our children matter. We promote the individuality of all our children, irrespective of ethnicity, attainment, age, disability, gender or background.

Please see the Inclusion Policy for further information.

Equalities at Central
Over the past couple of years, we have worked hard to ensure that our curriculum represents a wide range of identities and cultures. We encourage our children to question and challenge views and be confident about expressing themselves. We are passionate about ensuring our children are aware of the protected characteristics from the Equality Act (2010). Acceptance and awareness are at the heart of our mission for equalities to prepare our children to be kind, caring and respectful citizens.

Please see the Equalities Policy for further detail.

More information about our curriculum can be found via the curriculum subject pages. If you wish to speak to a member of staff about any aspect of our curriculum, please contact Mrs a Bond, our Acting Deputy Head.
